Marijuana Prices in Denver and Colorado: Spring 2016 Update
Education

Springtime is in the air – and thankfully, so are somewhat lower prices at recreational dispensaries across Colorado, specifically around the Mile High.

As we do every season, we randomly surveyed 25 recreational stores in the greater Denver metro area, as well as 10 recreational stores along the I-70 corridor in the mountains to determine general recreational marijuana price trends. To make sure we found true averages, we disregarded the most expensive and the least expensive strains per store, as appropriate. Remember that many dispensaries offer “high” and “low” grade strains, which often increase or decrease the average cost by around 50%.

Overall, the findings from the spring 2016 season compared to the data from the winter 2015/2016 determined an average decrease of 4% in the Denver metro area and an almost flatline in the mountains (with a mild uptick for 1/8oz and 1/4oz and mild downtick for 1/2oz and ounces).

Similar to other price trend reports from within the cannabis industry, we’re continuing to see a decline in pricing across the board, nearing trends of stabilization. Although the change is slight, we believe these price shifts are connected to several factors.

As we mentioned last season, the recreational marijuana market ebbs and flows with supply and demand. Hence why competition must always be taken into consideration in Colorado, especially around Denver. Although the Mile High recently paused the number of stores/grows allowed in the county, the numerous openings within the last year across the state has effectively pressured businesses to lower prices in order to keep their current customers and attract new ones.

Additionally, Colorado dispensaries have not been required to vertically integrate -- or take everything in-house including cultivation, manufacturing (edibles/products), distribution, etc. As a result, many more "grow-only" operations have emerged, which again, increases supply across the state, often creating more product than the actual demand and therefore automatically decreasing cost.

Finally, increased legalization across the US is also lowering prices in Colorado. Thanks to new rules and regulations that continue to push out black market dealers, the overall risk for cultivating and distributing such products are consequently decreases as well. Dispensaries will now need to compete not only with one another, but additional legal recreational markets as well.

Keep an eye out for a slight decrease in prices over the next few months.
